How To Paint Flowers on Rocks Using Black Background Method

To employ this method, you simply use a wide brush (foam brushes are probably best) to apply the black paint on to the rock of your choice.
Wait for the black paint to dry thoroughly about 1/2 an hour, and then take your flower stencil and lay it over the black background.
Stencil the flowers in white acrylic paint. It should look something like the picture below when you are finished with this step.

Stenciling the design (flowers, fairies, animals, etc.) over the black background with white acylic paint, makes a nice foreground on which to color.
Stenciling the flowers with white paint first will make whatever colors you choose pop dramatically next to the black background which will give the flowers a very realistic look.

After the white paint dries, take Deco paint pens and color your flowers. You might want to go over your flower design a second and third time to get really bright colors, waiting for it to dry in between coats of course.
I love Deco paint pens, because you can basically use them to color anywhere in your house without the mess of dripping paints and you won't have to clean any brushes!
These paint pens are amazing because they really give you a lot of control since you use them just like a pen!
Also, the paint goes on thick and gives you a really nice layer of paint for durability and weather resistance if the rock you are painting is going to be placed outdoors in a garden setting.
I know you can buy Deco paint pens at any A.C. Moore craft store (don't forget your 40(+) percent weekly coupon that you can usually find on line), but you may want to buy them in a set to get started and have a nice selection of colors to choose from, like the one below...

I think "the black background method" is one of the best ways to paint flowers onto a large rock. Stenciling makes things so easy, so if you're thinking, "I can't paint," think again because you definitely can!
Below is a picture of a rock I painted using this method. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, I would love to help!
